  • Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) Hands-on Lab

Encouraged from the positive feedback in terms of number of participants and attendees’ comments, this week the Swiss MSDN Team hold once again another Hands-on Lab here in Wallisellen. This time the topic was Windows Communication Foundation (WCF), the powerful Microsoft technology to built service-oriented systems, based on connected services and applications.

The lab was divided into 2 parts. In the first part, after a short introduction about the technology, people where required to build a service that exposes 2 endpoints: one available for external communication, for clients on platforms others than windows, accessing the service using HTTP and SSL (to guarantee confidentiality); and another one for internal windows clients (for communication inside an organization within a windows environment) accessing the service using TCP.

In the case of the TCP Endpoint people were asked to use Windows Integrated Security as authentication mechanism, while for the HTTP Endpoint, basic authentication in combination with SSL was used.

The last part of the lab showed attendees how to host a service inside Internet Information Server 7 with WAS (Windows Activation Services), which offers for the first time support for non-HTTP Protocols inside IIS.

Recently I was looking for a nice existing script for a client project. I wanted something elegant, simple and lightweight. What I found were a number of scripts built on JavaScript frameworks and a few others that really lacked any appealing interface or were over 30kb. I challenged myself to build a full-featured slideshow gallery under 4kb. Hopefully I will be add a few more features to the script soon and make it a little mode user-friendly.

  • I wrote an ASP.Net 2.0 based Web application few days back using which you can manage basic functionality for your IIS 6.0 Web Sites from any where, any time over the Internet.

Here are the features I have incorporated in this application.

    Application Pool related activities

    · Recycle/Start/Stop Application Pool(s)

    · Change Application Pool Identity.

    · Check features like Application Pool Recycling options, Current state of an Application Pool and current Application Pool Identity.

    · Enumerate an Application Pool to see the Web applications running under it.

    Web Site related activities

    · Start/Stop Web Site(s)

    · Check features like current Web Site state, and some configuration related settings like Web Site physical path, Server Bindings, Secure Bindings, Authentication method, SSL access, Application Pool etc.

    IISRESET

    · At times the only way to recover from a problem is to restart IIS services. You can restart all IIS services like IISADMIN, SMTP and World Wide Web Publishing service from any where through this application. It’s equivalent to executing an IISRESET /force from the command prompt.

You can find more details on this here

  • With the introduction of Silverlight 2.0 beta 1 at MIX08 in March, the infant Silverlight platform took a big step forward. It now has rich support for data binding. It has a vastly increased subset of WPF’s UI engine. It even has radical new technologies like Deep Zoom. But most importantly, Silverlight 2.0 beta 1 introduces a brand new collection of built-in UI controls.

The new UI controls are not a surprise, but they are a key milestone in Silverlight’s maturation. Microsoft has always shipped platform technologies with a collection of built-in controls, and beta 1 ushers in that era for Silverlight. Developers evaluating the platform as an alternative to building applications in ASP.NET or WinForms can now seriously consider it since it has the beginnings of the complete UI productivity toolbox.
